Crude glycerol is a liquid byproduct of biodiesel production, obtained by transesterification of fatty acids. In the production process sodium methylate is used as catalyst. The basic raw material used in the production is rapeseed oil, while other types of vegetable oils can be used as well.
Glycerol has a wide range of applications - it is used as animal feed ingredient, in biogas plants, in chemical, food, pharmaceutical and construction industries, etc.
